From 16–19 November 2023, the European Laudato Si’ Alliance (ELSiA) gathered in Taizé for its third eco-spirituality workshop, bringing together 34 participants from over 20 organisations across 11 European countries. The retreat focused on strengthening ecological conversion by exploring the relationship between spirituality, daily life, and care for creation.
Under the theme “Skills for Ecological Conversion: Inspiration from Ora et Labora,” participants reflected on the balance between work, prayer, and rest, drawing inspiration from the Rule of Saint Benedict. Discussions explored how economic systems, animal welfare, and sustainable development are connected to integral ecology and personal responsibility.
The workshop also introduced participants to initiatives promoting ecological transformation, including the work of the Ecological Conversion Group, which encourages practical responses to the ecological challenges highlighted in Laudato Si’. Additional sessions examined new approaches to transforming the world of work, expanding compassion toward all creation, and reflecting on Sabbath traditions as a reminder of the importance of rest and balance in human and environmental wellbeing.

Beyond lectures and discussions, the retreat included practical workshops led by the Taizé community, allowing participants to experience ecological practices such as beekeeping, gardening, pottery, and waste and energy management. Daily prayer, shared community tasks, and simple living further reinforced the connection between ecological awareness and spiritual life.
Participants also reflected on eco-spiritual wisdom from Indigenous traditions and ancestral communities, which emphasise the sacred interconnectedness between humanity and the Earth and offer valuable perspectives for responding to today’s ecological crisis.
The retreat provided a space for reflection, dialogue, and personal growth. Participants highlighted how eco-spirituality can inspire meaningful lifestyle changes and renewed commitment to caring for our common home. The experience concluded with participants sharing the insights and motivations they will carry forward into their organisations and communities, reinforcing ELSiA’s mission to promote ecological justice across Europe.
