A messenger of hope for our common home

The European Laudato Si’ Alliance joins the global community in mourning the passing of Pope Francis, a shepherd of profound compassion, wisdom and courage.

Through his inspiring encyclical Laudato Si’, he awakened the conscience of the world to the deep connections between the cry of the earth and the cry of the poor. His call for an “integral ecology” offered not only a theological vision but a moral imperative – one that links environmental stewardship with social justice, economic transformation and spiritual renewal.

Pope Francis’ courageous voice and visionary leadership has inspired a generation to rethink the role of faith in addressing the ecological crisis. He reminded us that care for creation is not an optional commitment, but a central expression of our dignity, solidarity and love for one another.

As we mourn this loss, we also give thanks for his prophetic witness and enduring legacy. ELSiA honours his memory and stands in solidarity with all those who continue the mission he so powerfully championed.

We also share the heartfelt reflections of some of our member organisations’ directors, who were deeply moved by his life, words, and tireless hope for a better future.
